We are delighted to announce Jamie Campbell as the winner of the 2023 David Cornfield Melanoma Fund Recognition Award. Established in 2019, this annual award recognizes excellence in melanoma prevention, awareness and support.
Jamie Campbell is a celebrated Canadian sportscaster. Host of Blue Jays Central on Sportsnet since 2010, Jamie has also reported on Major League Baseball playoffs, the Canadian Football League, the Super Bowl and the Olympics.
In October 2023, Jamie faced a health challenge – a diagnosis of actinic keratosis, a condition that raises the risk of skin cancer. Jamie was advised to undergo immediate treatment on both sides of his face. Treatment was harsh, leaving Jamie’s face extremely red and inflamed. As Jamie recovered, he missed broadcasting the 2023 MLB World Series.
Jamie made the brave decision to share his health challenges publicly. Explaining why he would be missing the World Series broadcast, Jamie posted graphic photos of his face post treatment. He urged his fans to protect their skin from the sun by covering up, seeking shade and using sunscreen. Jamie’s photos and prevention advice reached thousands of fans. His message was further amplified when the media picked up Jamie’s story, with articles appearing across Canada and the United States.
We commend Jamie for his leadership in spreading critical awareness of skin cancer and the importance of early detection and prevention. By sharing his personal journey, Jamie has empowered Canadians to reduce their risk of skin cancer.
Thank you Jamie and congratulations on this well-deserved award.
